Diagnostic Knee MRI Scan

Affordable and Accessible

A knee injury can be extremely debilitating and frustrating. If you’re suffering from one, it’s likely getting in the way of your everyday activities and preventing you from enjoying any sports. To ensure your recovery, you need accessible diagnostics to get treated soon.

Get a knee MRI scan and diagnostic report at a competitive price through Vista health. You can easily schedule an appointment with us online in just 5 minutes. You can also self-refer, allowing you to get a high-quality scan without a referral from a physician.

When to Get a Knee MRI

You should consider getting an MRI if you’ve been experiencing problems with your knee that have lasted longer than a few weeks. These include:

  • Joint pain
  • Recurring muscle pain
  • Difficulty walking
  • Weakness or instability
  • Swelling around the knee
  • Popping or crunching noises

What a Knee MRI Scan Detects

If you’re experiencing knee joint pain that increases with exercise, a limited range of motion or a collection of fluid around your knee, an MRI will help identify the cause of the problem.

A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner uses a powerful magnet and radio waves to take cross-section images of your knee. It will show your radiologist the structures within it, including:

  • Joint capsule
  • Patella
  • Ligaments
  • Meniscus
  • Tibial and femoral condyles (rounded end of the lower leg bones)

Some of the possible issues your radiologist may find include:

  • Joint weakness
  • Fractures
  • Osteoarthritis and other degenerative diseases
  •  Infections
  • Tumours
  • Fluid build-up in the knee
  • Decreased range of motion
  • Damage to ligaments, meniscus or soft tissues
  • Tendon and ligament tears

With an accurate diagnosis of your problem, your physician will then be able to prescribe an appropriate treatment plan. This allows you to maximise your chances of a full recovery.

How to Prepare for Your MRI Scan

Unless told otherwise, just eat and take medication as you usually would. At most, you just need to inform our patient care team of your medical history.

However, some electronic implants and conditions may affect how your MRI scan is performed or whether it’s safe to do it at all. These include:

  • Cochlear implants
  • Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD)
  • Pacemaker
  • Artificial joints
  • Artificial heart valves
  • Allergy to MRI contrast material
  • Pregnancy
  • Claustrophobia

Depending on what you have, your radiologist may need to use different techniques or recommend another procedure. In most cases, it is entirely safe, though an electronic implant may distort the images.

The actual scan is simple. Your radiologist will ask you to remove metal objects like jewellery, change into a gown and lie on the MRI table. The scanner will create loud noises, but this is completely normal. Just relax and stay still for the length of time indicated by your radiologist.
