What is private diagnostic screening, and how is it different from a scan?

In diagnostic healthcare we use the terms ‘scan’ and ‘screen’ for two different but closely related practices.

Screening is generally performed where patients don’t have symptoms. It’s used for preventative health checks, and to evaluate the likelihood of diseases developing in later life. It’s useful for people who want to understand their bodies, and where someone has a reason to think they may be at risk, for instance if they have a family history of a particular condition or disease.

A scan is a procedure where the patient is examined using technology to examine parts of the body, and to locate, identify and assess diseases, injuries and other potential problems. It’s usually performed when the patient is already displaying symptoms, but can also be used for preventative health checks within a scanning procedure.

SELECT A BODY PART

What can private health screening detect?

Health screening is a powerful tool in understanding the body, and an effective way of identifying potential health risks early on. It’s particularly useful where the patient does not yet have symptoms, but may be at higher than normal risk of developing a condition - for example if they have a family history of a particular disease, or other risks like high blood pressure or smoking. Screening techniques can be used for every part of the body, including the head, heart, spine, abdomen and limbs. Choose a body part to explore further.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. A key feature of the Vista Health private screening service is that you can self-refer or book online. This removes the need to arrange an appointment with your GP or other health professional, which could be inconvenient and add to the time you need to wait.

If, for any reason, you need or would prefer to have a referral, we can offer our own private GP referral service. This will be a virtual appointment, held online at a time that suits you.

Consultation rates are available with a 20% discount when you book along with your screening appointment.
