There are two main types of hearing loss - conductive hearing loss, which is usually caused by some form of blockage in the ear, and sensorineural hearing loss, which is caused by issues within the inner ear or the auditory nerve.

What might be causing my hearing loss?
There are a number of different reasons why you might be experiencing hearing loss. Our free expert hearing aid consultation will help identify the cause, and will suggest an appropriate solution. Some contributing factors to hearing loss include:

- eardrum damage
- otosclerosis (formation of new bone around the middle ear)
- genetics
- noise exposure

What happens during the test?
Our clinics are run by highly qualified HCPC-registered hearing aid dispensers. Our friendly, relaxed free test is a simple five-step process.

Step 1
Our expert will briefly discuss your medical history, and ask about your hearing. They’ll be looking for ways to help you, so being honest about how you feel will help them understand your needs and offer the best advice.

Step 2
You’ll then sit in a booth and listen to sounds played to test your hearing, and the dispenser will check inside your ears for abnormalities or obstructions.

Step 3
If there’s something of concern, the dispenser may perform a painless procedure called tympanometry. This inflates your ear canal to test your eardrum.

Step 4
If the test suggests you need hearing aids, the dispenser will make a recommendation. They’ll discuss all the options and help you decide the best way forward.

Step 5
We’ll schedule a follow-up appointment, in around two-to-four-weeks time, to make sure everything is working well, and to fine tune the programming if necessary.

How often should I have a hearing test?
We recommend once you have a hearing test to get it re-tested at least every three years.
How long will the appointment take?
The tests are all carried out by HCPC registered Hearing Aid Dispensers.
When will I get the results?
Once the test is finished the Audiologist will explain the results to you. It may be that your hearing is normal in which case no further action is taken. Should you need an onward referral to an Ear, Nose and Throat consultant or hearing aids are required this will be explained to you in full.
What happens if I need a hearing aid?
If you have been advised that you would benefit from having a hearing aid (or aids), the Audiologist will advise you of the next steps. It may be that you are fitted with a hearing aid (or aids) there and then you may have to return. Any return is usually within two weeks.
What aftercare is available?
We are here to help and support you after you have had a hearing aid from us. Aftercare appointments are free and can be arranged when needed. We will also provide you with a free supply of 60 batteries (for non-rechargeable hearing aids) and a pack of wax guards to help maintain your hearing aids.
