MRI Scan Man

What is an MRI prostate scan?

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging, a way of taking pictures inside the body using magnetic fields and radio waves. MRI prostate screening uses the technique to focus on the prostate gland and the surrounding structures. It’s a safe, painless and non-invasive procedure.

Prostate MRI is used for the detection, evaluation and diagnosis of cancer and other conditions. Unlike X-rays and CT scans, MRI prostate doesn’t expose the patient to radiation.

Why choose to have a private MRI prostate scan?

Prostate MRI is intended for men aged 40 and above. Prostate cancer is closely associated with age, but there may be additional reasons for getting checked out - for example if you have a family history of prostate cancer, you’re worried about elevated PSA levels, or you’ve had an abnormal rectal exam. Urinary issues, including an unexplained, frequent need to go to the toilet, might also cause concern.

What conditions can a prostate MRI scan detect?

  • Prostate Cancer

Prostate MRI is highly effective in identifying potential cancerous abnormalities within the prostate gland, enabling the recognition of suspicious regions that may need additional evaluation or biopsy.

  • Prostate Size

The scan can detect a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate, which could lead to urinary symptoms.

  • Lesions or Anomalies

A lesion is an irregular region, mark, or growth that could indicate the presence of infection, inflammation or prostate cancer.

  • Pelvic Tissue Health

A prostate MRI can also assess the bladder, rectum, colon, seminal vesicles, kidneys, gallbladder, liver, and pelvic bone marrow for any irregularities or abnormalities.

What is MRI prostate screening?

MRI prostate screening is a medical imaging procedure that utilises Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technology to examine the prostate gland and surrounding tissues.

It is commonly used to detect, evaluate, and diagnose various prostate-related conditions, particularly prostate cancer. This non-invasive imaging technique generates detailed images, aiding in the early detection and assessment of prostate abnormalities, as well as treatment planning and monitoring.

What tests are used to diagnosis prostate cancer?

Prostate cancer can be diagnosed through a combination of tests and procedures. These may include:

- MRI can provide detailed images of the prostate gland and can help identify suspicious areas for targeted biopsy and assist in staging and treatment planning.

- PSA blood tests are recommended in conjunction with your MRI scan.

Is MRI prostate screening safe?

Prostate MRI is a non-invasive imaging technique and is generally safe. However, it may not be suitable for individuals with certain medical conditions or those who cannot tolerate an MRI scan (e.g. due to claustrophobia).

Who should consider undergoing MRI prostate screening?

You might need a prostate MRI if you have elevated PSA levels, an abnormal digital rectal exam (DRE), a family history of prostate cancer, or concerning symptoms related to your prostate. It helps to detect and evaluate prostate cancer and other prostate-related issues.

How long does an MRI prostate screening take?

The duration of a prostate MRI is typically around 40-60 minutes, depending on the imaging protocol and the need for contrast enhancement.

How do I schedule a prostate MRI?

You can purchase a screening package directly through our website by clicking here. Alternatively, you can fill out the contact form below and our patient care team will be in touch.

Do I need a PSA test?

We recommend you purchase a blood test in conjunction with your scan for prostate screening - you can order online through Check4Cancer at an additional cost of £89.

How can I prepare for a prostate MRI scan?

For optimal image quality, it is necessary to fast for a duration of 4 hours prior to your scan and ensure your bowels are empty.
