What Is A Mammogram?
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, but it is also one of the most treatable.
With your Vista Health Breast Screening, you can benefit from the early detection of breast cancer, giving you the best possible chance of beating it.
A mammogram is an imaging technique to detect abnormalities within your breast that you might not see or feel. It takes a few minutes and uses a very low dose of radiation in the form of X-rays to capture pictures of the inside of your breasts.
Mammograms can help detect early signs of breast cancer - signs that you can’t yet see or feel yourself. When caught early, breast cancer is more likely to be small and successfully treated.
A mammogram can also detect non-cancerous tumours and cysts, so you can find out exactly where you stand with your breast health.
If you're experiencing symptoms like a lump or changes in the appearance of your breasts, please make an appointment with your GP as soon as possible instead of booking a screening appointment.

FAQs
Your questions answered
If you’re about to begin a healthcare journey, you’re likely to have a few questions. We’ve tried to answer the most common queries here - but if you don’t find what you’re looking for, you can always ask one of our friendly Patient Care Advisors.
Do I need breast screening?
If you’re a woman aged 40 or over, it’s important to have regular breast screening to monitor your breast health and detect any potential issues early. Regular screening has reduced the number of deaths due to breast cancer by around 1,300 each year. Remember, almost all women diagnosed with breast cancer in the earliest stage survive for at least five years.
NHS breast screening typically starts at age 50, and you will be invited for your first screening between the age of 50 and your 53rd birthday, with regular screenings offered every three years after.
If you have recently had a mammogram, please be aware that we cannot perform a repeat screening within 12 months of your last scan. This ensures accurate results and minimises unnecessary radiation exposure.
What will happen at my breast screening?
Your breast screening will be carried out by female staff only. You will be asked to undress from the waist up, and the mammographer will position one breast at a time between two plates on the mammogram machine. Two pictures of each breast are taken. Your breast will need to be compressed firmly between the plates for a few seconds so that clear mammograms can be taken.
What will happen after my breast screening?
You and your NHS GP will receive a summary of your results from one of our expert radiologists. We aim to deliver all results within 5 working days.
If your results are normal, you will not need any further tests. Most women get a normal screening result (their mammogram shows no sign of cancer). However, you must continue to be breast-aware and report any breast changes to your GP without delay.
For a few women, screening can be a two-stage process. You may be recalled because your mammogram shows that more tests are needed. This happens more often for women having their first mammograms. This is usually because we do not have other mammograms to compare with. Something that looks unusual on your first mammogram may be completely normal for you. The first mammogram is a baseline. Returning for subsequent screening allows us to compare images and find subtle changes that can occur over time.
Booking your mammogram with Vista Health means we may have immediate access to any previous NHS screening mammograms if they were carried out at one of our centres.
If your mammogram detects an abnormality, it will be documented in your results, along with advice on recommended next steps for further investigation. You can present the results to your GP for referral to the NHS or book an appointment to be seen and assessed at your convenience by one of our expert-led teams at your local Vista Health Breast Centre.
You will then either be referred via your NHS GP to have these additional tests carried out in the NHS and see an NHS breast surgeon, or you can have these additional tests carried out at our breast screening clinic and one of our experienced clinicians.
How long does breast screening take?
Breast screening takes around 30-45 minutes. The remainder of your appointment allows time to ask any questions. You will also be told what to expect during and after your appointment.
