What is earwax?

Everyone has earwax - it’s a natural secretion that forms a protective layer in the ear canal, providing lubrication and preventing irritation and itching. Sometimes, however, too much ear wax can build up, and this can lead to earache, itchiness and tinnitus. It can also significantly impair your hearing.

What is Ear Microsuction?

During microsuction, an audiologist inserts a small probe into the ear, and uses low suction pressure to remove ear wax and any other debris. The procedure is performed under magnification, with a bright LED light giving a clear view of the ear canal and eardrum. Microsuction to remove earwax has some important advantages over the traditional technique of syringing: - it doesn’t involve flushing the ear with water, and so there is no chance of ‘over syringing’ - microsuction can be performed even if you have a perforated eardrum - microsuction is more hygienic than syringing and less likely to lead to infection - you can expect instant results following the procedure.

What are the benefits of ear microsuction?
  • Excellent view of the ear

  • No ear drops required

  • No water flushed or ear irrigation

  • Safe for perforations

Is ear microsuction safe?

Microsuction is one of the safest treatments to clean the ear.

The canal and ear wax are directly viewed with a microscope whilst it is being removed. This makes the procedure much safer and more relaxing treatment for the patient.

Do I need a referral from a GP?

For Ear Microsuction, you can refer yourself which means we do not require a referral from a medical clinician.

What should I expect during an appointment?

You will be invited to the microsuction room, the audiologist/nurse will ask you to lie on the couch to have the procedure performed.  If you are a wheelchair user and would like to have performed whilst seated, we can still perform the procedure while you are in the wheelchair. The clinician will show you the equipment and explain the procedure to you.  The suction machine can be a bit noisy but tolerable and the procedure can take up to 10 minutes per ear or even shorter depending on ear wax texture, ear wax depth and ear canal size.

You should be able to resume to normal activities straight away, however if you feel dizzy you will be encouraged to sit in the department until it settles, the dizziness should resolve within a few minutes.
