X-rays, or radiographs, are among the best known and widely used diagnostic imaging techniques. They’re a fast, non-invasive way to produce images of the inside of the body.

We offer fast access to X-ray examinations, with reports from expert radiologists available within three working days or your appointment.

What is an X-ray?

An X-ray examination is a fast, safe and effective way of producing images of the inside of your body. It’s particularly useful for looking at bones, blood vessels, heart and lungs.

How does an X-ray work?

We use the term ‘X-ray’ to refer to the technology of producing X-ray images, but the rays themselves are actually a kind of electromagnetic radiation. They can’t be seen by the naked eye, but they can be detected by the X-ray machine and turned into images. Dense parts of your body such as bones appear white or light in the images, and softer parts - which the X-rays can pass through more easily - look darker.

Why would I need an X-ray?

X-rays can look at many different parts of the body, but are most often used to diagnose some of these problems:

Fractured or broken bones

X-rays are an effective way to detect a range of conditions including fractured bones, joint dislocation, injuries, and joint abnormalities such as arthritis.

Breathing difficulties

X-rays are often used to examine the lungs, heart and chest wall. A scan can identify breathing problems, a persistent cough, chest pain, an injury or fever.

Scoliosis

Scoliosis is the abnormal curvature of the spine. It can affect people of any age, from babies to adults. A scan can determine the severity and corrective treatment needed.

Heart and lung disease

X-rays can identify heart failure, infection, and lung issues such as pneumonia and lung cancer.  They can also reveal chronic conditions, such as cystic fibrosis.

How long will my X-ray session take?

The X-ray will be taken in just a fraction of a second. Depending on which body part is being examined, though, it may take a few minutes to prepare and position you for the X-ray, and we would ask you to attend around 10 minutes before your appointment to make sure everything is in order.

Do I need to prepare for my X-ray?

You don’t normally need to do anything to prepare for an X-ray, and you can eat, drink and take medicines as normal before your appointment.

It’s a good idea to wear loose, comfortable clothes, and avoid wearing jewellery or clothes with metal parts, including zips, as we might need to ask you to take these off.

Are X-rays safe?

X-rays are a form of radiation, but the body part that’s being examined in an X-ray session will only be exposed to a low level of radiation for a fraction of a second. It’s equivalent to a few days’ worth of the background radiation in the natural environment, and although there is a risk, it’s considered to be very small, and outweighed by the benefits of the examination.

I don’t have any symptoms. Can I still book a procedure?

Yes. Diagnostic healthcare can provide reassurance that all is well, and help you plan a healthy future lifestyle.

Can I discuss my results?

We offer a consultation service with GMC registered GPs to discuss your scan results.

*20% consultation discount will be applied when booked together with your scan.

How much will diagnostic healthcare cost?

Our diagnostic services start from as little as £75.

What if I cannot refer myself?

Self-referral is available in most circumstances. However, in some instances, we may need further clinical information. We will contact you if this is the case. If needed, we offer a virtual GP consultation service where we can provide you with a referral and a follow-up consultation to discuss results.

We accept self-referral in most cases. Self-referral allows you to take control of your own health with direct access to our own specialist diagnostic services. We also offer a GP consultation service to provide you with a referral if you need one.

When will I get my results?

We aim to deliver all results within three working days of your appointment. If you have not heard from us within this timeframe, please contact us.

How long will my appointment take?

It depends on the scan or screening you choose, but most appointments take less than 90 minutes. We ask you to arrive around 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment.
