Private groin ultrasound scans

Ultrasound scans are a safe, non-invasive technology used to diagnose a wide range of conditions throughout the body. A groin ultrasound scan examines the area between the upper thigh and abdomen, particularly to assess hernias, where an internal part of your body pokes through the muscle or tissue wall.

Vista Health is one of the UK’s leading providers of private diagnostic services, operating from over 60 locations and with ultrasound facilities in key specialist diagnostic centres across the country.

What is an ultrasound scan and how does it work?

Ultrasound is a non-invasive technology which directs harmless, high-frequency sound waves into your body. It’s highly effective, and used extensively for a range of medical concerns. Please note that as a specialist provider of diagnostics, Vista Health does not currently offer pregnancy-related ultrasound services.

During your scan, the technician or sonographer will use a small, handheld device emitting high-frequency sound waves, which can’t be heard by the human ear. The sound waves bounce off your organs and create echoes which are picked up by the device, sent to a computer and turned into live, moving images which can be recorded and shared with your doctor.

Groin Hernia Ultrasound

What is a hernia?

A hernia happens when an internal part of the body, such as part of the bowel or a section of fatty tissue, pokes through the surrounding muscle. This may cause a lump to appear, especially when you’re straining or coughing. Some hernias can be pushed back in - they can even disappear when you lie down. Although some hernias are symptomless, others can be very painful and lead to medical emergency.

Hernias are more common in men than women, although women are more likely to experience femoral hernias.

What kinds of hernia can my groin ultrasound scan assess?

There are many different kinds of hernia. The main types which occur in the groin area, and which can be assessed by this ultrasound scan, are:

  • inguinal hernia, which is more common in men; and

  • femoral hernia, which is more common in women.

What are the advantages of an ultrasound scan?

Ultrasound is often a good choice for early diagnosis of a wide range of conditions. The technique captures highly detailed images of the soft tissues that don’t appear clearly on x-rays, and allows the patient and practitioner to see images in real time.

A private ultrasound scan is also: safe, using only harmless, high-frequency sound waves; relaxed and comfortable, allowing you to stay fully awake throughout; convenient and accessible, with appointments available at short notice; affordable, with Vista Health’s ultrasound scanning service starting at £150.

Are ultrasound scans safe?

Yes. There are no known risks from ultrasound waves, and unlike some other scans, like x-rays, there’s no exposure to radiation.

How do I prepare for a groin ultrasound scan, and how long will it take?

No special preparation is needed for a groin ultrasound scan, though you should wear two-piece clothing for easy access. The examination should take around 15 minutes.

What’s included in a groin ultrasound scan?

Your ultrasound scan will be performed by one our our qualified sonographers. It will include: your diagnostic appointment; examination of the area between the upper thigh and abdomen; a diagnostic ultrasound report and scan images, delivered within three working days of your appointment.

An optional post-scan consultation with one of our private GPs is available at an additional charge.
