Private pelvis ultrasound scans for women
For people aged 16 years and above
Private pelvis (female) ultrasound scans
Ultrasound scans are a safe and generally non-invasive technology, used to diagnose a wide range of conditions throughout the body. A transabdominal ultrasound scan of the pelvic area in women looks at the uterus, ovaries and adjacent areas. In some cases, an internal examination is performed to look more closely at certain internal organs. A different, specialist ultrasound scan is available for men.
Vista Health is one of the UK’s leading providers of private diagnostic services, operating from over 60 locations and with ultrasound facilities in key specialist diagnostic centres across the country.

What is an ultrasound scan and how does it work?
Ultrasound is a non-invasive technology which directs harmless, high-frequency sound waves into your body. It’s highly effective, and used extensively for a range of medical concerns. Please note that as a specialist provider of diagnostics, Vista Health does not currently offer pregnancy-related ultrasound services.
During your scan, the technician or sonographer will use a small, handheld device emitting high-frequency sound waves, which can’t be heard by the human ear. The sound waves bounce off your organs and create echoes which are picked up by the device, sent to a computer and turned into live, moving images which can be recorded and shared with your doctor.
Why would an ultrasound scan of the female pelvis be performed?
A female pelvic transabdominal ultrasound scan is generally performed to look at the uterus, ovaries and adnexa. This scan can help diagnose a range of abnormalities, including
-
ovarian cysts
-
polycystic ovaries
-
endometriosis
-
fibroids
-
uterine lining abnormalities

.
What are the advantages of an ultrasound scan?
Ultrasound is often a good choice for early diagnosis of a wide range of conditions. The technique captures highly detailed images of the soft tissues that don’t appear clearly on x-rays, and allows the patient and practitioner to see images in real time.
A private ultrasound scan is also: safe, using only harmless, high-frequency sound waves; relaxed and comfortable, allowing you to stay fully awake throughout; convenient and accessible, with appointments available at short notice; affordable, with Vista Health’s ultrasound scanning service starting at £150.
Are ultrasound scans safe?
Yes. There are no known risks from ultrasound waves, and unlike some other scans, like x-rays, there’s no exposure to radiation.
What happens during an internal examination?
In some cases, an internal ultrasound scan may be recommended. This will be either transvaginal or transrectal, and involves a small probe being passed gently into your body so that images can be transmitted to a monitor.
How do I prepare for a female pelvic ultrasound scan, and how long will it take?
No special preparation is needed for an ultrasound scan of the pelvis, though you may be asked to empty your bladder before the scan. The examination should take around 15 minutes.
What’s included in a female pelvic ultrasound scan?
Your ultrasound scan will be performed by one of our qualified sonographers. It will include: your diagnostic appointment; examination of the pelvic area, using either a transabdominal, transvaginal or transrectal scan; a diagnostic ultrasound report and scan images, delivered within three working days of your appointment.
An optional post-scan consultation with one of our private GPs is available at an additional charge.
