When do you need a Cardiac MRI?

You should consider getting a cardiac MRI if you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Recurring chest pain, tightness or pressure
  • Lack of stamina
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Swollen feet (a sign that your heart can’t pump blood effectively)
  • Pain in your left shoulder

Your doctor will also order a cardiac MRI scan if they suspect you are at risk of heart failure and other severe heart problems.

What a Cardiac MRI Scan Detects

An MRI scanner will take detailed images of cross-sections of your heart, providing your radiologist with valuable information to assess your condition. It will show your:

  • Heart valves
  • Blood vessels
  • Pericardium (your heart’s outer lining)
  • Your heart walls’ thickness

Based on the results, your radiologist may diagnose you with any of the following heart conditions:

  • Congenital heart disease
  • Heart valve disease
  • Cardiac tumours
  • Cardiomyopathy and other heart muscle problems

Once you have your cardiac MRI diagnostic report, your physician can use it to determine the best treatment for you.

How To Prepare For Your MRI Scan

You won’t need to do much to prepare for your scan. Some patients are asked to fast before the procedure, but this is rare. Unless you’re instructed to do otherwise, you can eat and take medication normally.

You will need to inform our patient care team about any electronic implants and specific conditions, including:

  • Pacemaker
  • Cochlear implants
  • Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD)
  • Artificial heart valves
  • Artificial joints
  • Pregnancy
  • Claustrophobia
  • Allergy to MRI contrast material

Based on the information you provide, your radiologist may adjust the procedure, take additional precautions or suggest a different diagnostic examination. For example, they may teach you relaxation techniques or sedate you if you’re claustrophobic.

This provides comfort and reassurance, and offers a variety of scanning positions including sitting, standing, leaning, and lying.
