What is an MRI scan?
MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. It’s a way of taking pictures inside the body without resorting to invasive surgery. Using magnetic fields and radio waves, MRI scans let us see joints, muscles, nerves, bone marrow, blood vessels and other structures in exceptional detail.
During your scan, you’ll normally lie on a table that slides through a large tunnel, which contains the magnets that form the images. There’s also an option to use an upright or open scanner if you have mobility or anxiety issues.

Individual body part MRI scan
An MRI scan is a safe, painless and non-invasive procedure, widely used to view the joints, muscles, nerves, bone marrow, blood vessels and other body structures. To read about MRI scans for specific body parts, see the table below.
Full body MRI scan
Our total body MRI scan provides immediate insight into your current overall health. A total body MRI scan includes the brain, abdomen, pelvis and full spine. The platinum package includes clinical insight into the health of your heart.
Cardiac MRI
A cardiac MRI scan allows cardiologists to view exceptionally detailed images of your internal organs, including your heart structure and blood vessels, and is used to diagnose a wide range of heart conditions including coronary heart disease, congenital heart disease, heart valve disease and cardiac tumours.
MR Arthrogram
An MR Arthrogram is an in-depth diagnostic examination that tests the inside of a joint (e.g. shoulder, knee, wrist, ankle) to determine whether you have an injury or symptoms. The imaging equipment is used to create detailed images, detailing the inside section of a joint to ensure a quick and easy diagnosis.
Open and upright MRI
For many procedures, Vista Health provides the option of an Open and Upright MRI scanner. This is an alternative to a conventional MRI machine, which some patients will find more comfortable. With the Open MRI scanner, you sit upright and look out from the machine while the scan is in progress, rather than being enclosed within the machine. We provide Open MRI scanners at selected locations in the UK.

Attend your chosen centre on the day of your appointment. Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment.

Can you help me understand my results?
If you’d like to discuss your scan results with one of our GPs, you can arrange a consultation. There’s a 20% discount on consultation fees if you book when you arrange your scan.
Can I refer myself?
We accept self-referral in most cases. Self-referral allows you to take control of your own health with direct access to our own specialist diagnostic services. We also offer a GP consultation service to provide you with a referral if you need one.
What if I need an open or upright scanner?
For some patients - including those with restricted mobility, anxiety and people with claustrophobia - the standard ‘tunnel-style’ MRI scanner may be challenging. An alternative is the open and upright scanner, which can be more comfortable for some patients. This provides comfort and reassurance, and offers a variety of scanning positions including sitting, standing, leaning, and lying.

Can you help me understand my results?
We will send your diagnostic report to your referrer or GP, or if you’d like to discuss your scan results with one of our GPs, you can arrange a consultation. There’s a 20% discount on consultation fees if you book when you arrange your scan.
How long does an MRI scan take?
Most scans take between 20 and 40 minutes, depending on the size of the area we’re investigating. Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment.
How much will an MRI scan cost?
Our MRI scans start from £249. The fee includes a full written report within 3 working days, and access to your images online to view, download or share with a medical professional such as your GP. When you book online, you’ll have the option to spread the cost over three months, interest free.
How soon can I have my MRI scan?
With MRI facilities across the UK, we can offer scans at short notice. We work evenings, weekends and bank holidays, and you can self-refer and book here>>
