Affordable, accessible 12-lead ECG testing
Vista Health is a leading provider of private ECG testing services, offering on-site tests and at-home ECG monitoring to patients across the UK.
ECG stands for ‘electrocardiogram’, one of the most common tests for monitoring heart rate, rhythm and activity. It’s a simple, safe and non-invasive procedure.
What is an electrocardiogram (ECG)?
ECG stands for ‘electrocardiogram’. It’s a basic investigation to help diagnose potential problems with heart function. Completely safe and pain-free, it involves attaching a number of sticky electrodes or small sensors to the arms, legs and chest area to measure the electrical activity of the heart.
Why would I need ECG testing?
Typical symptoms which might prompt an ECG test include:
-
irregular heartbeat
-
shortness of breath
-
significantly high blood pressure
-
heart palpitations
-
a suspected heart valve problem
-
dizziness and fainting
-
pain in the chest
What can an on-site ECG detect?
ECG testing checks the heart’s electrical activity. It can be used to diagnose a number of conditions, including:
-
coronary heart disease
-
angina
-
pericarditis (inflammation of the tissue around the heart)
-
cardiomyopathy (swollen or thickened heart walls)
It may also be used to monitor heart health where the patient has other medical conditions or lifestyle factors, including smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure or cholesterol, or a family history of heart disease.
What types of private ECGs are available?
Vista Health offers 12-lead electrocardiogram testing, on site at seven locations across the country. We also provide at-home ECG monitoring to patients anywhere in the UK.
What happens during an on-site, 12-lead ECG test?
A 12-lead ECG should take between ten and fifteen minutes, and involves taking information from 12 different areas of the heart, providing the doctor with a 360-degree view of your heart function. It generates a graph which is then analysed by an expert to confirm that everything is as it should be, or to report any abnormalities.
-
10 electrodes are positioned on the body
-
6 electrodes on the chest
-
1 electrode on each of your limbs
-
The electricity generated by your pulse is recorded
-
An expert analyses the graph produced by your pulse
How do I prepare for my on-site ECG test?
You should avoid using any lotions, creams, oils or powders on your skin before your test. It’s a good idea to wear a top that’s easy to take on and off, and you shouldn’t eat a heavy meal or consume caffeine if you expect to have an exercise or stress test as part of your ECG session. Some people may need to have chest hair shaved away in places.
How long does a 12-lead ECG test take?
A 12-lead ECG test normally takes between ten and fifteen minutes. We would ask you to attend around 15 minutes before your appointment time.
What happens to my ECG results?
Your results will be analysed by a qualified ECG analyser and will be sent to your nominated GP in 3 working days. The results include a written report and graphics of your heart rate over a certain period.
