Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been around for more than four decades, and it continues to be widely used as a diagnostic tool around the world. In children, the MRI is used to help diagnose conditions in the brain, ranging from injuries to congenital disorders.
How Does MRI for Children Work?
An MRI scan for children works the same as it does for adults. The machine uses a strong magnetic field, a computer and radiofrequency waves to create multiple detailed images of a child’s internal tissues, organs, muscles and structures. Even though the magnetic field is powerful, it cannot negatively impact the growth and development of the child being scanned.
Contrary to popular belief, MRI does not use radiation, and is a safe procedure for children.
Who Is Not a Candidate for a Paediatric MRI?
As previously stated, paediatric MRIs are safe and non-invasive. However, there are some contraindications.
Before the MRI, the child’s parents or guardian should inform the physician and radiographer if the child has:
-
Allergies to certain food or medications
-
Hay fever
-
Hives
-
Allergic asthma
Additionally, metal and electronic items are not allowed in the MRI scanner because they can interfere with its magnetic field, resulting in burns. They can also turn into projectiles, potentially injuring the patient. For this reason, it’s critical to inform the radiographer and the physician if the child has metal implanted devices or medical aids, such as surgical clips, prosthetic limbs and cochlear implants.
What to Expect during a Paediatric MRI Scan
When you arrive at the diagnostic centre, you will be given a safety questionnaire. If your child is wearing clothes with buttons and other metal accessories, a patient care expert will take your child to a changing room.
Then, the child will be escorted to the exam room. If screened for safety, parents can come along as well.
The scan is painless and lasts from 30 to 60 minutes. During the scan, the child should stay still, wear ear protectors or headphones and communicate with the radiographers through an intercom.
Children will have a button to press in case they are feeling uncomfortable or scared.
