Jewellery, earrings, sunglasses, and similar accessories must be removed before the MRI scan. Loose metal objects can injure you due to the strength of the MRI's magnetic field.
Dental fillings and braces, however, are usually left inside the mouth intact. Remove all pens or similar objects if you have any in your pockets. Make sure you wear loose, comfortable clothing and come at least 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment.
Going Inside the MRI Scanner
You may be instructed to change into a gown for your scan and will then lie on the scanner's table. The table will then slide inside the MRI scanner. You will have a coil around your head and a small microphone to help you hear and communicate with the MRI staff. The scan is extremely noisy, therefore a pair of earplugs and headphones will be provided.
Most head MRIs last between 15-30 minutes. For scans with a particular focus on specific areas, you may be given intravenous contrast media that will make certain brain regions more visible on the scan.
